Savor the Flavor of Easy Broccoli and Mushroom Stir Fry

Learn how to make delicious Broccoli and Mushroom Stir Fry. Easy recipe with step-by-step instructions.

  • Total Time: 45 minutes
  • Yield: 4 servings 1x

Ingredients

Scale

  • 3 cups broccoli florets (about 1 large head or pre-cut bag)
  • 8 ounces cremini or white mushrooms, sliced
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil or avocado oil (substitute with olive oil if needed)
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced (about 1 tablespoon)
  • 1 teaspoon fresh ginger, grated or finely chopped (optional, but adds great flavor)
  • 1/4 cup low-sodium soy sauce (or tamari for gluten-free)
  • 1 tablespoon oyster sauce (optional; for a richer umami, can skip or substitute with hoisin sauce)
  • 1 tablespoon honey or maple syrup (balances the savory flavors)
  • 1 teaspoon toasted sesame oil (for finishing, adds a nutty aroma)
  • 1/4 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes (optional, for a little heat)
  • 2 green onions, sliced thin (for garnish)
  • 1 tablespoon toasted sesame seeds (optional garnish)

Instructions

  1. Heat the vegetable oil in a large skillet or wok over medium-high heat. I like to use a cast iron pan because it gets nice and hot, but any non-stick pan works too.
  2. Add the minced garlic and grated ginger to the pan. Stir constantly for about 30 seconds until fragrant—but be careful not to burn the garlic. This step always reminds me of my mom’s kitchen—where the smell of garlic and spices meant something delicious was on its way.
  3. Toss in the sliced mushrooms. Cook for about 4-5 minutes, stirring occasionally, until they start to soften and release their juices. You’ll notice them shrink down and turn golden brown at the edges. This is where the savory depth builds.
  4. Add the broccoli florets to the skillet. Stir everything together and cook for another 5-6 minutes, or until the broccoli is bright green and tender-crisp. If you want softer broccoli, feel free to cover the pan for a minute or two to steam it slightly. I’ve found this trick especially helpful when my kids want their veggies a little less crunchy.
  5. Pour in the soy sauce, oyster sauce (if using), and honey or maple syrup. Stir well to coat all the veggies evenly. At this point, the kitchen starts to smell amazing—like those cozy dinners I remember growing up.
  6. Sprinkle in the crushed red pepper flakes if you’re feeling adventurous. Stir and cook for an additional 1-2 minutes to let the flavors meld together.
  7. Turn off the heat and drizzle the toasted sesame oil over the stir fry. Give everything one last gentle toss.
  8. Garnish with sliced green onions and toasted sesame seeds before serving. I always try to sneak a little green onion on top because it adds such a fresh, sharp contrast to the rich sauce.
