Cheesy Ranch Potatoes with Smoked Sausage Recipe for Ultimate Comfort Food

Learn how to make delicious Cheesy Ranch Potatoes Smoked Sausage. Easy recipe with step-by-step instructions.

  • Total Time: 45 minutes
  • Yield: 4 servings 1x

Ingredients

Scale

  • 4 medium Yukon Gold potatoes, diced into 1-inch cubes
  • 1 pound smoked sausage, sliced into 1/2-inch rounds (and yes, Kielbasa works beautifully here)
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil or avocado oil
  • 1 packet (1 ounce) ranch seasoning mix, or 2 tablespoons homemade ranch seasoning
  • 1 cup shredded sharp cheddar cheese
  • 1/2 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 1 small onion, diced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1/4 cup chopped fresh parsley (optional, but I love the freshness it adds)
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Optional: 1/2 cup sour cream or Greek yogurt for serving

If you’re watching your carbs, swapping the potatoes for cauliflower florets can make this dish a low-carb winner. And for a dairy-free version, try vegan cheese or just skip the cheese altogether—the smoky sausage and ranch seasoning still give you plenty of flavor.

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C). I like to start with a hot oven to get those potatoes crispy on the edges.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, toss the diced potatoes with olive oil, ranch seasoning, salt, and pepper until everything is evenly coated. This step reminds me of helping my dad stir big pots—simple but crucial to building flavor.
  3. Spread the potatoes out on a rimmed baking sheet in a single layer. Roast for 20 minutes, flipping halfway through so they brown evenly.
  4. While the potatoes roast, heat a large skillet over medium heat. Add the sliced smoked sausage and cook for about 5-7 minutes until the edges get a nice sear and the fat starts to render out.
  5. Add the diced onion and minced garlic to the pan with the sausage. Cook for another 3-4 minutes until the onions soften and become translucent.
  6. Once the potatoes have roasted for 20 minutes, add them to the skillet with the sausage and onions. Stir gently to combine.
  7. Sprinkle the shredded cheddar and mozzarella evenly over the top. Cover the skillet with a lid or foil and let it cook for another 5 minutes, just until the cheese melts beautifully.
  8. Remove from heat and sprinkle with fresh parsley for a pop of color and freshness. Serve warm, with a dollop of sour cream or Greek yogurt if you like that little tangy creaminess.

One of my favorite parts about this recipe is how forgiving it is. If your potatoes need a few more minutes in the oven or if you want your cheese extra melty, you can adjust as you go. Cooking at home, especially with kids around, is rarely about following a recipe to the letter. It’s about making it work for your family and your schedule.
