Ingredients
Scale
Before we dive into the baking, let’s gather our ingredients. You probably have most of these in your pantry, which is another reason I love this recipe. Here’s what you’ll need:
- 4 cups all-purpose flour
- 1/4 cup granulated sugar
- 1 packet (2 1/4 teaspoons) instant yeast
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 cup warm milk (about 110°F)
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter, melted
- 2 large eggs
If you’re out of milk, feel free to substitute with almond milk or even water in a pinch. Need a dairy-free option? Use coconut oil instead of butter—it won’t be quite the same, but it’ll still taste great!
Instructions
- In a large mixing bowl, combine the warm milk, sugar, and yeast. Let it sit for about 5-10 minutes until it becomes frothy. This is one of those moments I love; it reminds me of my dad teaching me to be patient while baking.
- Once frothy, add in the melted butter and eggs. Mix until well combined.
- Gradually add the flour and salt, stirring with a wooden spoon or spatula until a dough begins to form.
- Transfer the dough to a floured surface and knead for about 8-10 minutes until it’s smooth and elastic. Don’t be afraid to get your hands messy; that’s part of the fun!
- Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover it with a kitchen towel, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour or until it doubles in size. I often set it near my oven while it preheats—it’s like a cozy little spot for the dough!
- Once risen, punch down the dough gently to release air. Shape it into a loaf and place it in a greased 9×5 inch loaf pan.
- Cover again and let it rise for another 30-45 minutes. Preheat your oven to 350°F during this time.
- Bake for 25-30 minutes or until golden brown. When you tap the top, it should sound hollow—just like the sound of my kids’ laughter when they see the bread come out of the oven!
- Let it cool for a few minutes before slicing. Try to resist the urge to dive in too quickly; the smell alone is intoxicating!
