- 1 pound ground beef
- 1/2 cup breadcrumbs
- 1 egg
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon pepper
- 2 tablespoons butter
- 2 large onions, thinly sliced
- 2 cups beef broth
- 1 teaspoon thyme
- 1/2 cup grated Gruyère cheese
Feel free to substitute Gruyère with any good melting cheese you have on hand. And if you’re out of beef broth, chicken broth works in a pinch.
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 375°F.
- In a bowl, mix ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg, salt, and pepper. Form into meatballs.
- In a large skillet, melt butter over medium heat. Add onions and cook until caramelized, about 15 minutes.
- Add beef broth and thyme to the onions, simmering for 5 minutes.
- Place meatballs in the skillet, spooning sauce over them. Cover and bake for 20 minutes.
- Sprinkle Gruyère cheese over the meatballs and bake for an additional 5 minutes until melted.
