  • Total Time: 45 minutes

Ingredients

Scale

The key to this dish lies in selecting the right ingredients—each one playing a crucial role in delivering the robust flavors that make this recipe a hit.

  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1/2 cup breadcrumbs
  • 1 egg
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon pepper
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 2 large onions, thinly sliced
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 1 teaspoon thyme
  • 1/2 cup grated Gruyère cheese

Feel free to substitute Gruyère with any good melting cheese you have on hand. And if you’re out of beef broth, chicken broth works in a pinch.

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F.
  2. In a bowl, mix ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg, salt, and pepper. Form into meatballs.
  3. In a large skillet, melt butter over medium heat. Add onions and cook until caramelized, about 15 minutes.
  4. Add beef broth and thyme to the onions, simmering for 5 minutes.
  5. Place meatballs in the skillet, spooning sauce over them. Cover and bake for 20 minutes.
  6. Sprinkle Gruyère cheese over the meatballs and bake for an additional 5 minutes until melted.
