Ingredients
Scale
The key to this dish lies in selecting the right ingredients. I always opt for quality over quantity, using fresh herbs and good flour to ensure each bite is flavorful and satisfying. Here’s what you’ll need:
- 3 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 1/2 cups sourdough starter
- 1 cup water
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 tablespoon dried rosemary
- 1 tablespoon dried thyme
- 1 1/2 teaspoons salt
If you don’t have fresh herbs, dried ones work well too. And if the sourdough starter isn’t an option, a pinch of yeast can serve as a substitute in a pinch, though the flavor won’t be as nuanced.
Instructions
- In a large bowl, combine the flour, water, and sourdough starter. Mix until a shaggy dough forms.
- Add the minced garlic, rosemary, thyme, and salt to the dough, mixing until well combined.
- Cover the bowl with a damp cloth and let it rest at room temperature for 4-6 hours, or until doubled in size.
- Once risen, place the dough on a lightly floured surface. Shape it into a round loaf.
- Preheat your oven to 450°F and place a Dutch oven inside to heat.
- When ready, carefully place the dough into the hot Dutch oven, cover, and bake for 30 minutes.
- Remove the lid and bake for an additional 15 minutes, or until the crust is golden brown.
- Let the bread cool on a wire rack before slicing.
