Ingredients
Scale
The key to this dish lies in selecting the right ingredients that bring out the best flavors. My dad taught me that even the simplest ingredients can create something special when chosen with care.
- 1 pound ground beef
- 1 cup orzo pasta
- 2 cups beef broth
- 1 can (14.5 ounces) diced tomatoes
- 1 onion, finely chopped
- 3 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 teaspoon dried oregano
- 1/2 teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional)
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese (optional)
For a vegetarian twist, substitute the ground beef with mushrooms or lentils. And if you’re out of orzo, rice or small pasta shells work well too.
Instructions
- Heat a large skillet over medium heat and add the ground beef. Cook until browned, breaking it apart with a spoon, for about 5-7 minutes. Drain excess fat.
- Add the chopped onion and minced garlic to the skillet with the beef. Sauté until the onion is translucent, about 3 minutes.
- Stir in the orzo, allowing it to toast slightly for a minute or two.
- Pour in the beef broth, diced tomatoes, oregano, and red pepper flakes. Bring to a simmer, stirring occasionally.
- Reduce heat to low, cover, and let cook for 10-12 minutes until the orzo is tender and has absorbed most of the liquid.
- Season with salt and pepper to taste. Sprinkle Parmesan cheese on top before serving, if desired.
