Ingredients
Scale
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 tablespoon baking powder
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder (optional, for an extra kick)
- 1 1/2 cups shredded cheddar cheese
- 1 cup chopped cooked ham
- 1 1/2 cups buttermilk
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter, melted
If you’re missing an ingredient or two, don’t worry! Feel free to play around—swap cheddar for mozzarella or add a sprinkle of herbs if that’s what you have on hand. It’s all about making it work with what you’ve got, just like how my dad used to adapt his recipes with whatever was in the pantry.
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 450°F (230°C). Melt the butter in a 9×13 inch baking dish, then set it aside.
- In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, salt, and garlic powder if using. It’s a simple mix, and you can almost hear my dad’s voice reminding me to keep stirring until it’s just right.
- Stir in the shredded cheese and ham, making sure they’re evenly distributed throughout the flour mixture.
- Pour in the buttermilk and gently fold the mixture until a dough forms. It should be sticky and soft, much like the dough my mom used to make on those busy weeknights.
- Transfer the dough to the prepared baking dish with the melted butter. Use a spatula to spread it evenly. Don’t worry if it looks a bit uneven—that’s where the charm comes in!
- Bake for 20-25 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
- Let the biscuits cool for a few minutes before cutting them into squares. Serve warm and enjoy the buttery, cheesy bliss.
