Ingredients
Scale
- 6 all-beef hot dogs (or your favorite variety—turkey or plant-based work great too)
- 6 hot dog buns
- 1 cup fresh pineapple chunks (canned works in a pinch, just drain well)
- 1/2 cup teriyaki sauce (store-bought or homemade if you have a few extra minutes)
- 1/4 cup diced red onion
- 1/2 cup shredded mozzarella or Monterey Jack cheese
- 2 tablespoons butter
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- Optional: sliced jalapeños for a little kick
- Optional: chopped fresh cilantro or green onions for garnish
If you want to keep things gluten-free, swap the buns for your favorite gluten-free version or wrap the hot dog in a large lettuce leaf for a fresh twist. And for the teriyaki sauce, if you’re watching your sodium, look for a low-sodium version or make a quick mix of soy sauce, honey, garlic, and ginger at home.
Instructions
- Start by heating a skillet over medium heat and add the olive oil. Once shimmering, add the hot dogs. Cook them for about 5-7 minutes, turning occasionally until they’re nicely browned on all sides. If you’re like me, you’ll sneak a little bite here and there while you cook—totally normal.
- Remove the hot dogs from the skillet and set aside. In the same pan, melt the butter and toss in the diced red onion. Sauté for about 2 minutes until softened, then add the pineapple chunks. Cook for another 3-4 minutes until the pineapple starts to caramelize slightly. This step really brings out that sweet, tropical flavor.
- Pour the teriyaki sauce over the pineapple and onion mixture. Stir well and let it simmer for 2 minutes until it thickens just a bit. The kitchen will smell amazing, and you might catch your kids peeking in wondering what’s cooking (mine definitely do).
- While the sauce simmers, lightly toast the hot dog buns in the oven at 350°F for 5 minutes or in another dry skillet. Toasting adds that little extra crunch and keeps the buns from getting soggy once the sauce is added.
- Assemble your Hawaiian hot dogs by placing a cooked hot dog in each bun, spooning generous amounts of the pineapple-teriyaki mixture over the top, and sprinkling with shredded cheese. If you’re feeling adventurous, add jalapeño slices for a spicy twist.
- Pop the assembled hot dogs under a broiler or in a hot oven for 2-3 minutes until the cheese melts and bubbles. Keep a close eye here—you don’t want to burn your masterpiece!
- Remove from heat, garnish with chopped cilantro or green onions if you like, and serve immediately. Believe me, your family will thank you.
