Ingredients
Scale
- 6 cups apple cider
- 1/4 cup brown sugar
- 2 cinnamon sticks
- 1 teaspoon whole cloves
- 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
- 1 orange, sliced
- 1 apple, sliced
- Optional: 1/2 cup dark rum for an adult twist
Feel free to swap the dark rum with apple juice if you’re serving little ones or prefer a non-alcoholic version. This cider is as adaptable as my dad’s stories, where the details changed but the heart remained the same.
Instructions
- In a large pot, combine the apple cider, brown sugar, cinnamon sticks, cloves, and nutmeg. Give it a good stir to ensure the sugar dissolves.
- Add the orange and apple slices, letting them float gently on top.
- Bring the mixture to a simmer over medium heat, allowing the spices to infuse and the flavors to meld for about 10-15 minutes.
- Reduce the heat to low and keep the cider warm, stirring occasionally. If you’re adding the rum, stir it in just before serving.
- Strain the cider into mugs, garnish with a slice of apple or orange if you’re feeling fancy, and serve hot.
As you sip, remember that home cooking is about creating moments—like the ones I cherish from my kitchen, where the counters are cluttered but the laughter is endless.
