Ingredients
Scale
- 4 large round bread loaves (sourdough or Italian work great)
- 8 cups cooked spaghetti noodles (about 12 ounces dry)
- 4 cups marinara sauce (store-bought or homemade)
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
- 4 cloves garlic, minced
- 1/4 cup fresh parsley, chopped (optional)
- 2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese
- 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese
- Salt and pepper, to taste
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
Substitutions & Tips: If you want a gluten-free option, you can use gluten-free bread loaves or even sturdy rolls. For a dairy-free version, swap butter for olive oil and use dairy-free cheese alternatives. And if fresh parsley isn’t on hand, dried Italian herbs add a nice touch.
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Using a serrated knife, carefully cut the top off each bread loaf and hollow out the inside, leaving about a 1-inch thick shell. Save the bread you remove for another use like breadcrumbs or croutons.
- In a small bowl, mix the softened butter with minced garlic and chopped parsley. Spread this garlic butter mixture evenly inside each hollowed bread bowl and on the cut-off tops.
- Place the bread bowls and their tops on a baking sheet. Brush the outside of each loaf with olive oil for extra crispness.
- Bake in the preheated oven for about 10-12 minutes, or until the bread is golden and slightly crispy but still soft enough to scoop.
- While the bread is baking, heat your marinara sauce in a saucepan over medium heat. Season with salt and pepper to taste. If you want to add a little extra depth, a pinch of red pepper flakes or Italian seasoning works wonders.
- Toss the cooked spaghetti noodles with the warm marinara sauce until well coated. You want every strand to be saucy but not drowning.
- Remove the bread bowls from the oven. Fill each one generously with the spaghetti mixture. Top with shredded mozzarella and a sprinkle of Parmesan cheese.
- Return the filled bread bowls to the oven and bake for another 10-15 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and bubbly.
- Let the bowls cool for a few minutes before serving to avoid any burnt tongues—a lesson I learned the hard way during a rushed dinner once!
