Ingredients
Scale
- 2 ounces tequila blanco (choose a good quality one for smoothness)
- 1 ounce fresh lime juice (about 1 large lime)
- 1 ounce orange liqueur (like Cointreau or Triple Sec)
- 1/2 ounce cinnamon simple syrup* (see tip below)
- 1/4 teaspoon ground allspice
- Pinch of ground cloves
- Ice cubes
- Coarse salt or sugar, for rimming the glass
- Orange or lime wedge, for garnish
*Cinnamon simple syrup: To make this, dissolve 1/2 cup sugar in 1/2 cup water over medium heat, add 2 cinnamon sticks, and simmer for 5 minutes. Cool and remove sticks. Store in the fridge for up to a week. If you’re short on time, you can substitute with 1/2 ounce of maple syrup or honey for a different but still delicious twist.
Instructions
- Start by preparing your glass. Run a lime wedge around the rim, then dip the glass into coarse salt or sugar. This adds a festive touch and balances the spices beautifully.
- Fill a cocktail shaker halfway with ice cubes. I like to use large ice so it melts slowly, keeping the drink chilled without watering it down too fast.
- Add tequila, fresh lime juice, orange liqueur, cinnamon simple syrup, ground allspice, and ground cloves to the shaker.
- Secure the lid and shake vigorously for about 15 seconds. I remember shaking drinks while my kids asked a million questions, so I always make sure this step is quick but thorough—no one wants a weak margarita!
- Strain the mixture into your prepared glass over fresh ice. The aroma of cinnamon and clove hits you first, which always makes me smile and think of cozy holiday mornings.
- Garnish with an orange or lime wedge, or even a cinnamon stick if you’re feeling fancy.
- Take a moment to breathe it in before your first sip. This is your well-deserved festive moment.
