Ingredients
Scale
Gather these ingredients, and you’re halfway to dessert heaven. Here’s what you’ll need:
- 1 box of chocolate cake mix (or homemade if you’re feeling ambitious)
- 2 cups of cold milk
- 1 package of instant chocolate pudding mix (5.1 oz)
- 2 cups of whipped topping (homemade or store-bought)
- 1/2 cup of chocolate chips or shavings (for garnish)
- 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract (optional, for extra flavor)
Feel free to substitute the chocolate cake with brownie pieces if you have some on hand. And for a dairy-free version, almond milk and coconut whipped cream work beautifully.
Instructions
- Start by baking your chocolate cake as per the package or recipe instructions. Let it cool completely. This is a great time to listen to a podcast or catch up on your favorite show while enjoying the aroma of chocolate wafting through the house.
- In a medium bowl, whisk together the cold milk and chocolate pudding mix for about 2 minutes until it thickens. Set it aside to firm up.
- Once the cake is cooled, cut it into small cubes. This is where the kids can jump in to help. My two love sneaking bites as they work!
- Now, it’s time to layer. In a large glass bowl or individual dessert cups, start with a layer of cake cubes.
- Next, pour a layer of chocolate pudding over the cake, spreading it evenly with a spatula.
- Add a generous layer of whipped topping over the pudding, smoothing it out gently.
- Repeat the layers until all ingredients are used, finishing with a dollop of whipped topping on top.
- Garnish with chocolate chips or shavings for that extra touch of indulgence.
- Refrigerate the trifle for at least an hour before serving to let the flavors meld together beautifully.
