Ingredients
Scale
- 3 cups all-purpose flour
- 1/4 cup granulated sugar
- 2 1/4 teaspoons instant yeast (one packet)
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 cup whole milk
- 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted
- 1/4 cup water
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1 large egg
- 1 cup apple butter
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
If you don’t have apple butter on hand, try substituting with a thick applesauce and a touch more cinnamon for a similar effect.
Instructions
- In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, sugar, yeast, and salt.
- In a small saucepan, warm the milk, butter, and water until the butter is melted. Let it cool slightly, then stir in the vanilla.
- Add the liquid mixture to the dry ingredients and mix until just combined. Add the egg and continue to mix until a soft dough forms.
- Knead the dough on a lightly floured surface for about 5 minutes, until smooth and elastic. If you have kids around, this is a great step to get them involved—my little ones love to help with the kneading!
- Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a clean towel, and let it rise in a warm place for about an hour, or until doubled in size.
- Once risen, roll the dough out into a large rectangle. Spread the apple butter evenly over the surface, then sprinkle with cinnamon.
- Cut the dough into strips, stack them, and then cut into squares. Place the squares upright in a greased loaf pan.
- Cover the pan with a towel and let it rise for another 30 minutes while preheating your oven to 350°F.
- Bake for 30-35 minutes, or until golden brown. The smell alone will have everyone gathering in the kitchen, just like in my childhood home.
- Allow the bread to cool slightly before serving. Enjoy each pull-apart piece with a hot cup of tea or coffee.
