Ingredients
Scale
- 1 pound ziti or penne pasta
- 1 pound ground beef
- 1 small onion, finely chopped
- 3 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 teaspoon dried oregano
- 1 teaspoon dried basil
- 1/4 teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional, for a bit of heat)
- 24 ounces marinara sauce
- 2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese
- 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese
- Salt and pepper, to taste
- Fresh basil, for garnish (optional)
Feel free to make substitutions based on what you have. Swap ground beef for turkey or chicken if you prefer a leaner option. Use any pasta shape you like, and if you’ve got a jar of homemade tomato sauce, even better!
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). While it heats up, bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Cook the ziti according to package instructions until al dente. Drain and set aside.
- In a large skillet over medium heat, cook the ground beef until browned, breaking it apart with a wooden spoon. This should take about 5-7 minutes.
- Add the chopped onion and minced garlic to the skillet, cooking until the onion is translucent and fragrant, about 3 minutes.
- Stir in the oregano, basil, and red pepper flakes, letting the spices bloom for another minute.
- Pour in the marinara sauce, then season with salt and pepper. Let the mixture simmer on low while you prepare the rest.
- In a large mixing bowl, combine the cooked ziti, ground beef mixture, and half of the mozzarella cheese. Stir until everything is well coated with sauce.
- Transfer the pasta mixture into a large baking dish. Top with the remaining mozzarella and Parmesan cheese.
- Bake in the preheated oven for 25 minutes or until the cheese is bubbly and golden brown.
- Let it cool for a few minutes, then garnish with fresh basil if desired before serving.
This recipe is forgiving and flexible, just like the ones I grew up with. Feel free to tweak the seasonings or add veggies if you’re feeling adventurous.
