  • Total Time: 45 minutes

Ingredients

Scale

Here’s what you need to bring these delightful rolls to life. I’ve included a few substitution suggestions based on what might be more readily available in your pantry.

  • 3 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup warm milk (you can use almond or oat milk for a dairy-free option)
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 packet (2 1/4 teaspoons) active dry yeast
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon ground cardamom
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground ginger
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cloves
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 1/4 cup butter, softened
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 23 tablespoons brewed chai tea (strong)

Instructions

Let’s get baking! Here’s how you can create these cozy Chai cinnamon rolls right in your kitchen.

  1. In a small bowl, mix the warm milk with the active dry yeast and a pinch of sugar. Let it sit for 5-10 minutes until frothy.
  2. In a large bowl, combine the flour, granulated sugar, salt, and spices. Stir well.
  3. Add the yeast mixture, melted butter, and vanilla extract to the flour mixture. Mix until a dough forms.
  4. Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 5 minutes, until smooth and elastic. Place in a greased bowl, cover, and let rise in a warm place for about an hour, or until doubled in size.
  5. Preheat your oven to 350°F. Punch down the risen dough and roll it out into a rectangle about 1/4 inch thick.
  6. Spread the softened butter over the dough, then sprinkle with brown sugar and the remaining spices.
  7. Roll up the dough tightly from one long side to the other, then slice into 12 rolls.
  8. Place the rolls in a greased baking dish and let them rise for another 20-30 minutes.
  9. Bake for 25-30 minutes, or until golden brown on top.
  10. While the rolls are baking, whisk together the powdered sugar and brewed chai tea to make the icing.
  11. Once the rolls are done, let them cool slightly before drizzling with the chai icing. Enjoy warm!
