Ingredients
Scale
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
- 1 cup granulated sugar
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter, melted
- 2 large eggs
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
- 1/2 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips (optional, but who can resist extra chocolate?)
This list is all about simplicity and flexibility. If you’re out of vanilla extract, a pinch of cinnamon or a splash of almond extract can add a unique twist. And if you’re dairy-free, substitute the butter with coconut oil for a slightly nutty undertone.
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a 9×9 inch baking pan.
- In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, cocoa powder, salt, and baking powder. Set aside.
- In a large bowl, stir together the melted butter and sugar until well combined.
- Add in the eggs one at a time, mixing well after each addition. Stir in the vanilla extract.
- Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, stirring until just combined. Be careful not to overmix.
- Fold in the chocolate chips, if using.
- Pour the batter into the prepared pan, spreading it evenly with a spatula.
- Bake for 20-25 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out with a few moist crumbs.
- Allow the dessert to cool in the pan on a wire rack before cutting into squares.
Remember, the key to this recipe is not to overbake. The edges should be set, but the center should remain slightly gooey and irresistible.
