Ingredients
Scale
- 1 pound ground beef or turkey
- 1 onion, finely chopped
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 24 ounces marinara sauce (or homemade tomato sauce)
- 1 teaspoon dried oregano
- 1 teaspoon dried basil
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 15 ounces ricotta cheese
- 1 egg
- 9 lasagna noodles
- 3 cups shredded mozzarella cheese
- 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese
If you’re short on ingredients, feel free to get creative. Substitute ground beef with turkey or chicken, or use cottage cheese in place of ricotta. My dad often played around with spices, so don’t hesitate to add a pinch of red pepper flakes for a little heat.
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
- In a large skillet, cook the ground beef over medium heat until browned. Add the chopped onion and minced garlic, cooking until the onion is translucent.
- Stir in the marinara sauce, oregano, and basil. Season with salt and pepper. Let simmer for about 10 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld together.
- In a bowl, mix the ricotta cheese with the egg until smooth. This step is my secret for creamy layers.
- Cook the lasagna noodles according to package instructions until al dente. Drain and set aside.
- In a 9×13-inch baking dish, spread a thin layer of the meat sauce, followed by a layer of noodles, then the ricotta mixture, and a generous sprinkle of mozzarella cheese. Repeat the layers, ending with noodles and top with mozzarella and Parmesan cheese.
- Cover with foil and bake for 25 minutes. Remove the foil and bake for an additional 15 minutes, or until the cheese is golden and bubbly.
- Let the lasagna rest for 10 minutes before slicing. This not only makes for easier serving but also allows the flavors to set beautifully.
Like my dad used to say, “Cooking is like storytelling; each ingredient adds its own chapter.” So don’t rush—let each layer tell its part of the tale.
