Ingredients
Scale
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 packet (2 1/4 teaspoons) active dry yeast
- 1/4 cup granulated sugar
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 3/4 cup warm milk (about 110°F)
- 1 large egg, at room temperature
- 4 tablespoons unsalted butter, softened
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1/2 cup softened butter (for laminating dough)
- Your choice of filling: Nutella, jam, or cinnamon sugar
Instructions
- In a large bowl, combine the flour, yeast, sugar, and salt. Stir well to combine.
- In a separate bowl, whisk together the warm milk, egg, and vanilla extract. Pour this mixture into the dry ingredients and stir until a rough dough forms.
- Add the softened butter to the dough and knead on a floured surface for about 8 minutes, or until the dough is smooth and elastic. If you have little helpers in the kitchen like my kids, let them join in on the fun!
- Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a damp cloth, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour, or until doubled in size.
- Once the dough has risen, roll it out into a rectangle on a floured surface. Spread the softened butter evenly across the dough.
- Fold the dough into thirds, like a letter. Roll it out again and repeat the folding process two more times to create those flaky layers.
- Cut the dough into strips, and if you’re adding fillings like Nutella or jam, spread a thin layer on each strip before rolling them into a coil and placing them in a muffin tin.
- Let the cruffins rise for another 30 minutes while you preheat your oven to 375°F.
- Bake the cruffins for 20-25 minutes, until golden brown and puffed. The smell will be enough to bring everyone to the kitchen!
- Allow them to cool slightly before serving. Dust with powdered sugar if desired, and enjoy the layers of flaky goodness.
