Ingredients
Scale
Let’s keep it simple, shall we? Here’s what you’ll need:
- 1 pound of button or cremini mushrooms, cleaned and halved
- 3 tablespoons of olive oil
- 4 cloves of garlic, minced
- 3 tablespoons of balsamic vinegar
- 1 tablespoon of soy sauce
- 1 tablespoon of fresh thyme leaves (or 1 teaspoon dried thyme)
- Salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste
- Optional: A pinch of red pepper flakes for a bit of heat
Feel free to substitute the mushrooms with whatever variety you have on hand. Portobellos and shiitakes also work wonderfully. And if you’re out of fresh thyme, don’t sweat it—dried thyme is a perfect stand-in!
Instructions
Ready to get cooking? Here’s how:
- Heat the olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Once the oil is shimmering, add the mushrooms.
- Cook the mushrooms for about 5 minutes, stirring occasionally, until they start to brown and release their juices.
- Add the minced garlic to the skillet and stir for 1 minute until fragrant, being careful not to burn it.
- Pour in the balsamic vinegar and soy sauce. Stir to coat the mushrooms evenly.
- Sprinkle in the thyme leaves, salt, and pepper. Add a pinch of red pepper flakes if you like a bit of heat.
- Let the mushrooms simmer in the sauce for another 5 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld together beautifully.
- Once the mushrooms are tender and the sauce has reduced slightly, remove from heat and serve hot.
Remember, cooking isn’t about following rules to the letter—it’s about feeling the rhythm of the dish. If you like your mushrooms with a bit more bite, adjust the cooking time accordingly!
