Ingredients
Scale
- 1 pound ground beef
- 2 large onions, thinly sliced
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 2 cups beef broth
- 1 cup shredded Gruyère cheese
- 2 cups cooked egg noodles
- 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1 teaspoon dried thyme
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 1/2 cup bread crumbs (optional for topping)
Feel free to substitute Gruyère with Swiss cheese if you prefer, and you can use ground turkey instead of beef for a lighter version. This flexibility is what home cooking is all about—making it work for you and your family.
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 375°F. While the oven warms up, heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat.
- Add the sliced onions and sauté them until they are golden brown and caramelized, about 15 minutes. This step always reminds me of my dad’s storytelling—patience is key!
- Remove the onions from the skillet and set them aside. In the same skillet, add the ground beef and cook until browned, breaking it up with a spoon as it cooks.
- Stir in the caramelized onions, beef broth, Worcestershire sauce, thyme, salt, and pepper. Let the mixture simmer for about 5 minutes to let the flavors meld together.
- In a large casserole dish, combine the beef mixture with the cooked egg noodles. Mix well to ensure everything is evenly distributed.
- Top the casserole with shredded Gruyère cheese and bread crumbs if you’re using them for that extra crunch.
- Bake in the preheated oven for 20-25 minutes or until the cheese is bubbly and golden. Let it cool for a few minutes before serving—if you can resist!
