Ingredients
Scale
- 1 pound ground beef (can substitute with ground turkey or chicken)
- 1/4 cup soy sauce (use tamari for a gluten-free option)
- 1/4 cup brown sugar
- 2 teaspoons sesame oil
- 1/4 teaspoon ground ginger
- 1/4 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes (adjust to taste)
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 2 cups cooked white rice (or brown rice for a healthier option)
- 2 tablespoons green onions, chopped
- 1 tablespoon sesame seeds (optional, for garnish)
Instructions
- In a large skillet over medium heat, add the ground beef. Cook until browned, breaking it apart with a spatula, about 5-7 minutes. Drain excess fat.
- Return the skillet to the heat and stir in the garlic, cooking until fragrant, about 1 minute.
- In a small bowl, whisk together soy sauce, brown sugar, sesame oil, ground ginger, and red pepper flakes. Pour the mixture over the beef, stirring to combine. Let it simmer for 2-3 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld together.
- While the beef simmers, prepare your rice according to package instructions. This is where I often remember my dad’s stories of his childhood meals—simple, hearty, and full of flavor.
- To serve, scoop the rice into bowls and top with the beef mixture. Sprinkle with green onions and sesame seeds for that extra touch of flavor and presentation.
