Ingredients
Scale
Here’s what you need to create this cozy, delicious breakfast:
- 1 loaf of day-old bread, preferably brioche or challah, cubed
- 6 large eggs
- 2 cups whole milk
- 1/2 cup heavy cream
- 1/2 cup maple syrup
- 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 cup packed brown sugar
- 1/4 cup butter, melted
- Powdered sugar, for dusting (optional)
If you’re out of heavy cream, feel free to substitute with an extra half cup of whole milk. And don’t worry if you don’t have day-old bread; simply toast fresh bread lightly in the oven before using it.
Instructions
Follow these simple steps, and you’ll have a breakfast that warms both the heart and the stomach:
- Preheat your oven to 350°F. Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish with butter or non-stick spray.
- Arrange the cubed bread evenly in the prepared baking dish.
- In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, heavy cream, maple syrup, vanilla extract, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt until well combined.
- Pour the egg mixture over the bread cubes, ensuring all pieces are soaked. Gently press the bread down to submerge in the liquid.
- In a small bowl, mix the brown sugar with the melted butter until smooth. Drizzle this mixture over the top of the bread and egg mixture.
- Bake uncovered in the preheated oven for 45-50 minutes or until the top is golden brown and the center is set.
- Remove from the oven and allow to cool for a few minutes before dusting with powdered sugar, if desired. Serve warm and enjoy!
One of my favorite tips is to prepare this dish the night before. Letting it sit overnight in the fridge allows the flavors to meld beautifully, making for an even more delectable breakfast the next day.
