- 1 pound ground lamb or beef
- 1 small onion, finely chopped
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 tablespoon tomato paste
- 1 teaspoon paprika
- 1 teaspoon cumin
- 1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper (adjust to taste)
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 1/4 cup chopped fresh parsley
- 12 small pita breads or flatbreads
- 1 cup plain Greek yogurt
- 1 tablespoon lemon juice
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 1/2 teaspoon dried mint (optional)
Feel free to substitute the lamb with turkey for a leaner version, or use gluten-free flatbreads if needed. It’s all about making this dish work for you!
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
- In a skillet over medium heat, add a tablespoon of olive oil. Once hot, add the chopped onion and garlic, sautéing until fragrant and translucent, about 3-4 minutes.
- Add the ground lamb or beef to the skillet, breaking it up with a spoon, and cook until browned. Drain any excess fat.
- Stir in the tomato paste, paprika, cumin, cayenne pepper, salt, and pepper. Let it all cook together for another 2 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld. Stir in the chopped parsley and remove from heat.
- Place the small pita breads on your prepared baking sheet. Spoon a generous amount of the meat mixture onto each piece, spreading it evenly to the edges.
- Bake in the preheated oven for about 10-12 minutes until the pitas are crisp and the topping is slightly browned.
- While the lahmacun bites are baking, prepare the yogurt drizzle by combining the Greek yogurt, lemon juice, olive oil, and dried mint in a small bowl. Mix until smooth.
- Once the bites are done, drizzle the yogurt sauce over each one before serving.
As a tip, if you’re making these with little ones around like I often do, involve them by letting them spread the meat or drizzle the yogurt. It’s a fun way to spend time together in the kitchen!
