Ingredients
Scale
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 1 onion, finely chopped
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 carrot, diced
- 1 celery stalk, diced
- 1 pound ground beef (or turkey for a leaner option)
- 1 can (28 oz) crushed tomatoes
- 2 tablespoons tomato paste
- 1 teaspoon dried oregano
- 1 teaspoon dried basil
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 1/2 cup red wine (optional but adds depth)
- 1/4 cup milk
- 12 oz spaghetti or pasta of choice
- Grated Parmesan cheese for serving
Feel free to substitute ground beef with ground chicken or use zucchini noodles instead of pasta if you’re cutting carbs. The beauty of home cooking is making it work for you!
Instructions
- Heat the olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the chopped onion, garlic, carrot, and celery. Sauté until the vegetables are soft, about 5 minutes.
- Add the ground beef, breaking it up with a spoon, and cook until browned. This should take about 7 minutes.
- Stir in the crushed tomatoes, tomato paste, oregano, basil, salt, and pepper. Pour in the red wine, if using. Bring to a gentle simmer.
- Reduce the heat to low, cover, and let it simmer for about 30 minutes, stirring occasionally. This is when the flavors deepen, and the sauce thickens. Feel free to sip on the extra red wine while you wait!
- Stir in the milk and let it cook for another 5 minutes. This adds a touch of creaminess to the sauce.
- Meanwhile, cook your pasta according to package instructions until al dente. Drain and set aside.
- Toss the pasta with the sauce, ensuring each strand is coated. Serve hot with a generous sprinkle of Parmesan cheese on top.
Remember, cooking isn’t about perfection. It’s about feeding your loved ones with care. If your kitchen is a bit of a mess by the end, you’re doing it right!
