Ingredients
Scale
Gathering the right ingredients is the first step to a successful meal. Here’s what you’ll need:
- 4 bone-in pork chops
- 6 medium russet potatoes, thinly sliced
- 2 cups shredded cheddar cheese
- 1 medium onion, thinly sliced
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 2 cups milk
- 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
- 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
- 1 teaspoon paprika
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- Optional: fresh parsley for garnish
If you’re short on cheddar, mozzarella works as a great substitute, and if you’re not a fan of pork, chicken breasts can be an excellent alternative. Remember, the joy of home cooking is in making it work with what you have.
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
- In a large skillet over medium heat, add the olive oil. Season the pork chops with salt, pepper, and paprika, then brown them on each side for about 3-4 minutes. Remove from the skillet and set aside.
- In the same skillet, melt the butter, then add the onions and garlic, cooking until the onions are soft and translucent.
- Stir in the flour, cooking for about a minute before gradually whisking in the milk. Continue to stir until the mixture thickens into a creamy sauce.
- Layer half of the potatoes in a greased 9×13 inch baking dish. Pour half of the cream sauce over the potatoes, then sprinkle with half of the cheese.
- Place the pork chops on top of the potatoes and cover with the remaining potatoes, sauce, and cheese.
- Cover the dish with foil and bake for 45 minutes. Remove the foil and bake for an additional 15 minutes, or until the potatoes are tender and the top is golden and bubbly.
- Let it rest for a few minutes before serving, garnished with fresh parsley if desired.
One of my little tricks: use a mandoline slicer to get those potatoes evenly thin. It’s a game-changer for ensuring everything cooks evenly.
