Ingredients
Scale
- 1 pound ground beef
- 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
- 4 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 tablespoon ginger, grated
- 3 tablespoons soy sauce
- 1 tablespoon fish sauce
- 1 tablespoon oyster sauce
- 2 teaspoons sugar
- 1 red bell pepper, sliced
- 1 cup Thai basil leaves
- 2 cups cooked jasmine rice
- 1 teaspoon chili flakes (optional, for heat)
- 1 lime, cut into wedges
Don’t have Thai basil? Regular basil will work in a pinch, and if you’re out of jasmine rice, any long-grain rice will do. This recipe is all about flexibility—use what you have and make it your own.
Instructions
- Heat the vegetable oil in a large pan over medium-high heat. Add the garlic and ginger, and sauté for about 30 seconds until fragrant.
- Add the ground beef to the pan, breaking it up with a spatula. Cook until it’s browned and cooked through, about 5-7 minutes.
- Stir in the soy sauce, fish sauce, oyster sauce, and sugar. Let the mixture simmer for another 2 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld together.
- Add the sliced red bell pepper to the pan and cook for another 3 minutes until it softens slightly.
- Toss in the Thai basil leaves and chili flakes, if using. Stir everything together until the basil is wilted and the sauce is well-distributed.
- Serve the beef mixture over a bowl of warm jasmine rice. Garnish with lime wedges for an extra zesty kick.
As you cook, remember that the kitchen is a playground. Experiment with spice levels, adjust seasonings to your liking, and most importantly, enjoy the process. It’s about making it yours, imperfections and all.
